Mark Latham has always struck me as almost a split personality. Not so great in front of a camera, but with the pen he is superb. Keenly perceptive, readable, truthful and I miss his columns in AFR and others. Unfortunately in this case, he is also accurate.

I tried hard to like this article, but all I felt was sadness. Latham's right - we are stuffed. Worse still, there's nothing on the horizon to change it. If Sussan Ley wins the Liberal leadership, well, it will just perpetuate.

Well there are two original factors of production - land and labour and their child, capital, is the third. There are three incomes you can get public revenue from - the rent of land, the wages of labour or the returns to capital. Only one of those factors of production can't wear or rust out, get old and weary, stop breeding and can't run away.

Go figure. If you won't charge the landholders for their tenures you have to tax productive labour and capital.

Tax the squatters not the workers.
