One of the things that bugs the Trump administration is the proportion of foreign students attending US universities. Especially the top universities, including the ivy league ones.
Here is a charge from the NY Times:
The school with the highest proportion of foreign students is Illinois Tech. It is not a particularly highly ranked university according to US News, one of the more referenced raters.
Notable also is that most of the schools with the most foreign students are schools focused on technical/science/engineering matters.
At Harvard, as you can see, 28% of its students are foreign.
In Australia however, haveing a proportion of foreign students below 30% is the exception and not the norm:
You will note that, other than Murdoch, 5 of these top foreign student schools are members of the Go8 - Australia's most research intensive universities.
If President Trump is concerned about Harvard’s 28%, why is there no concerned about the 40% plus in Australia’s “top” universities?
What does this mean for Australia’s students and Australia’s prosperity.
Sure it is great for the University administration industrial complex where ther salaries and perquisites are ENORMOUS. But given the amount of tax dollars going into the sector, why are no questions being asked?
Yeah oh. There are questions about the impact on housing and rents. But what about the broader questions.
As usual, this is a bipartisan disregard for Australia’s economic and social welfare.
Just as long as the revenue keeps ticking over, all is tickety boo.
Australian universities are no longer public charitable institutions devoted to the advancement of education and learning. They are now profit making corporations run by management for management with academics as an indentured labour force and students as captive customers. Given that students fund them it's time to restore graduate and staff votes for university senates.
