I am watching ABC Outsiders. Of course the government is borrowing more money to finance more energy bill relief.
This is what Treasurer Chalmers said:
That’s what we’re trying to do. To take some of the edge of these electricity costs. Without our assistance and without our interventions here, electricity would be more expensive”.
You must admire the message discipline. If only Chalmers was asked about whether the government’s interventions to make electricity cheaper would have been required without the government’s interventions to make electricity more expensive.
Put your hand up if you think this is insane?
I will put up my hand at this insanity. Because I am mystified as how after making electricity more expensive with government intervention, you can try to mollify the public with handouts to appear to make it cheaper.
I heard the ABC report this as a $X cost to taxpayers. Good on them for point, but not strictly accurate.
An increase in spending, without corresponding increase in taxes, is never a cost for TODAY'S taxpayers.
If only the jargon "cost to taxpayers" could be replaced with the the more truthful "increasing the debt repayable by today's school children, school leavers, university students and apprentices".
Assume a FIFO principle for debt repayment, older voters can afford to laugh all way to the bank.
