Give it time. This "logic" will soon come to Australia. Victoria first.
The US City of Chicago is on of the highest crime ridden cities in the US. As a badge of dishonour, it has one of the highest numbers of total homicides among large US. and its per-capita crime rates, especially for violent crime, are right up there.
Which makes the following statement from Chicago mayor Mayor Brandon Johnson breath taking. He:
was asked repeatedly in a television interview last week whether putting more police officers on the street would help curb crime, he called that approach “antiquated” and tried to change the subject: “I believe the city of Chicago and cities across America would be safer if we actually had, you know, affordable housing.”
More affordable housing will make cities safer.
Just to repeat, more affordable housing will make cities safer.
In the US, Mayors aren’t like the clowns we have in Australia. Their remit is more than the solar panels and self promotion strategies of Clover Moore and Nick Reece.
They run transport systems, police departments, schools.
The Chicago police force is the 2nd largest munisciple force in the US, behind New York, with some 14,000 police. Victoria police has around 16,000 (although to be fair, they cover a much larger geography).
But for the political head of a police department to say it is affordable housing and not police that leads to less crime, yeah, well.
I will just say … give it time. This “logic” will come to Australia soon. First through the Greens and shortly after through the left of the ALP.
I await Jacinta Allen winning the next Victorian election over those professional Liberal morons with such a line.
