I don’t have the resources of the ABC’s Media Watch and I don’t have the archive of Gerard Henderson’s Media Watch Dog Blog. I just offer the occasional highlight of the rubbish that is Australia’s “mainstream media”
After Dear Jess Irvine left the SMH, I hoped and prayed that her brand of idiocy dressed up aseconomic analysis had come to an end. Guess not.
Millie Muroi is the SMH’s latest totalitarian luddite dresses as an “Economic Writer”.
Writing her latest a tax is good for you analysis, Millie the Dillie has suggested that The secret to better health and less obesity is a tax.
Interesting. Evidence? Don’t think so.
I won’t go the recycled nonsense from the Grattan Institute that Millie the Dillie perpetuates, but will just quote one particular paragraph:
While the main goal of a sugary drinks tax would be to improve our health, it would also benefit the government’s bottom line (which has suffered in recent years as tax revenue from tobacco has plummeted). If introduced today, Grattan estimates, the sugary drinks tax would raise nearly $500 million in the first year, while also generating savings by reducing the demand for healthcare.
There you go. It’s not about health. It’s about the welfare of the government. To generate more tax revenue.
Genius. Just genius.
I would propose a Millie tax. That she be required to pay $1,000 per word tax for garbage she writes. It would not only help the government’s bottom line, but reduce the demand for healthcare.
Does anyone at the SMH actually review or edit the rubbish she writes?
Paying less tax would enable more people to afford better food choices. These socialist economists are dimwits who think a tax would fix everything.
There is already a tax on sugar drinks...its called the GST (GST being the single biggest policy failure of last 25 years, you cant change my mind) so that would be a tax on a tax.
