So. At Senate Estimates yesterday, Treasury officials confirmed that 83% of jobs created last year were “non-market” jobs. As in, they were government related - as public servants, through government funding or the such.
This does not include jobs that are BECAUSE of government. Compliance officers. People compiling information to receive government approval for projects. Lobbyists. Government affairs people.
100 percent is a workers paradise. Add in the because of government jobs, we’re probably closer to 90 percent or higher.
If not a paradise, then perhaps a workers nirvana.
How long before our political leaders start wearing military uniforms?
Watch and despair. And the Senator for Canberra justifying this is to be expected.
I think it time to declare Australia is a care economy. In desperate need of care.
According to the deep Treasury analysis - this was because of a catch up of employment in the care economy - “a recalibration coming through”. And these people earn hundreds of thousands of dollars. Tax payer dollars ultimately extracted from the market sector.
Look at the folically challenged Treasury official. The discomfort in being questioned on this.
Compliance officers
My past work (early 1990s) has included related responsibilities in the financial sector. I saw my main task, as streamlining relevant processes, so as to MINIMISE time spent (not so much by myself, but operational staff) on satisfying applicable regulations. No 'tail wagging the dog'
I recall a colleague in a legal firm circa 1990, passing on advice he had received from a legal recruiter, that the coming 'boom' area for legal jobs, would be in the compliance sector.
IMO, a litmus test of bad legislation, is drafting that requires employment of 'compliance' officers.
Not offering how that should be achieved.
Such a frustrating video to watch!
One guy I do like to watch grilling the ps crowd is Senator Rennick, he's very enjoyable.
